Contrary to popular knowledge and tradition, cherubim are not children but are actually quoted in the Bible as winged creatures with human and animal features. After the Fall of Man as told in the Book of Genesis, the cherubim were placed by the Creator to guard the way to the tree of life and the Garden of Eden.
In this wooden sculpture, a charming child angel, who is widely thought as a cherub, is sitting on top of the world as if guarding it. It is a more delightful representation of an angel guarding God’s creation as compared to the stern guards of Genesis.
This sculpture even alludes to Cupid, the God of Love from the Roman Mythology. Closely examining this work of art, one notes of the bow held by this child angel. A bow usually identifies a child angel as Cupid. This expertly carved figure imparts a message: Love is above all.
